A2A FOR ALA
Alexander is bicycling from Alexandra (South Africa) to Alexandria (Egypt) to raise awareness for the African Leadership Academy.
WHY AM I RAISING AWARENESS FOR ALA?
I have chosen to support ALA because of their inspired approach to the future of Africa. ALA not only focuses on delivering a world class education for its student. More than that it aims to identify and develop future leaders of the continent. I like to think that making a donation is really just a small investment in the leaders of tomorrow.
For me, this has to be the answer to drive positive and sustainable growth in Africa. Transformation can only happen with the right leadership and people in place. ALA provides hands on support to students to develop their leadership capabilities and places strong emphasis on entrepreneurship. With these skills and this mindset instilled while students are still in their teens, the right habits and behaviours form early and become the foundation for their own continued success as well as that of their countries and continent. ALA breaks down borders and shares cultures across Africa with 46 out of the 54 countries represented by students at ALA so far.

HOW DOES ALA ACHIEVE THIS?
ALA has a three step model:
1. Identify talent: ALA identifies the brightest talent from right across the whole of Africa and accepts just 5% of applications in a highly competitive process.
2. Develop through practice: Once in attendance, students complete an intensive program of intellectual growth and hands-on leadership development. For example, in 2017:

2. Develop through practice: Once in attendance, students complete an intensive program of intellectual growth and hands-on leadership development. For example, in 2017:
- 58 ALA students organized or served as delegates for ALA’s Model African Union in 2017. In total, 177 delegates from 27 schools in 24 countries gathered under the theme “Enhancing Capacity, Accelerating Progress”
- 39 Original Ideas for Development (OIDs) were presented to the Entrepreneurial Leadership Faculty team, the largest number of OIDs
in ALA history. The 2017 winner was X-Agriculture, a new irrigation technology. - 41 independent research projects presented in the fields of Science, Humanities, Creativity, and International Studies in 2017, including a project by second year, Eniola Oladipo, on the Science of Ethical Decision Making: Implications for Leadership on the African Continent
3. Connect to opportunities: ALA assists students beyond school too by connecting them with a powerful network of people across Africa and by supporting them to win scholarships to some of the best universities in the world:

THE ASK
95% of students receive financial support in order to be able to attend ALA. A full-year sponsorship of US$30,000 covers all expenses including tuition, visa costs, room & board, round-trip travel, medical insurance and university guidance. If we can raise one full-year sponsorship that would be extraordinarily marvelous! This is a pretty ambitious target, but if ALA is a pretty ambitious organization.
Every dollar counts and anything you can give is tremendously appreciated and will go straight to future leaders.
